Descriptive - Describe the scene before, during and after Sports Day

Arriving at the AAC field earlier than the stated time in my P.E uniform, I felt the crisp morning air heighten my senses and awaken every cell in my body – I was already raring to compete with the other houses to bring honour to my house. As I searched around the venue for the Purple House’s seating area, I noticed that a lot of students had arrived earlier than me and most of them were having a heated conversation about the sports matches that were about to start in a few hours. Suddenly, I heard someone shout out for me and saw my house mates waving at me. I swiftly approached them and we eagerly planned tactics for the upcoming matches while waiting for the event to start.

Gradually, more and more students arrived and scattered all over the place, milling around in groups of twos or threes; and the teachers, busy as a beaver, could be seen rushing hither and thither preparing for the start of the event. I could feel the excitement crackling in the air as the chatters and laughter became increasingly louder by the minutes. Abruptly, a booming voice announced through the surrounding speakers the commencement of our school’s annual Sports Day and shrieks of delight echoed everywhere, showing how pumped the students were for the game.

As the runners started to converge at the starting line on the red running track, the air around the bleachers felt dense now – the earlier excitement had turned into anxiety and anticipation; silence had fallen and I could hear my heart throbbing in my chest.

Bang! The shot exploded from the starting pistol and cheers and screams erupted from the stands. “Go! Go! Go!” voices chanted that seemed to be in sync with our heartbeats. As soon as the Red House’s runner crossed the finish line, howls of glory from the Red House’s seating area resonated through the whole field, mixed with the equally loud brouhaha from the other losing houses.

The matches continued closely one after another, and most of the students were already drenched in sweat halfway through the event. The whole place had become an oven, roasting everyone present into sweating pigs. I could constantly feel beads of sweat sliding down my back and my shirt was sticking uncomfortably to my body, as if it was trying to fuse into my skin. In addition to the already blazing weather, the heat exuding from the students excited body after each run only intensified the heat enveloping the venue, making the air harder to breathe. Consequently, whenever someone walked past me, I would be nauseated by the heavy stench of sweat that lingered behind. I would quickly move away to an open space to catch some fresh air or stay close to the food booth to take in the heavenly smell of food, rather than the stink. Nevertheless, I still could not escape the odour from my own perspiring body.

When the event finally came to an end, students could be seen taking group photos everywhere before dispersing. The number of students started to dwindle and the venue began to quieten down again as the sky progressively turned pinkish and then purplish. Some responsible students stayed back to clean the venue together with the supervising teachers and before long, the whole place regained its earlier, empty state while students were on their way home, tired yet satisfied from a whole day of fun and excitement.
