An Accident along the Expressway
Ben was in a taxi on his way home from
his football practice. It had been a tiring day at school and he could not wait
to go home. It was three o’clock, just before the start of the peak-hour
traffic. Ben was glad that he would not be caught in a jam. There were hardly
any cars on the road at that time. The taxi sped along the expressway without
slowing down.
Ben had just closed his eyes when he
heard a loud horn. Sitting up, he looked around him. The taxi driver was
pressing the horn as hard as he could. Just ahead, Ben saw a blue car swerving
into their lane. It was moving unsteadily fast. The taxi that Ben was in was
going too fast to slow down and it collided into the blue car. As both cars had
been travelling at a high speed, the crash did not stop the cars but caused
them to swerve dangerously towards the central reservation. The blue car was
going so fast that it mounted the reservation. With its wheels still spinning
and smoke coming out from the bonnet, it finally stopped. However, the taxi
that Ben was in was not as fortunate. Ben gripped the door handle firmly as the
driver tried in vain to stop the taxi from crashing into an oncoming car. As
the car came nearer, its horn was blasting. Ben opened his mouth to scream but
there was no sound. A moment later, a loud crash exploded around him. The taxi
flipped over so fast that Ben did not even know what had caused him to turn
upside down. Ben kicked at the door with all his might but it did not budge.
“Uncle! Uncle! Are you all right?” he
shouted but there was no response from the taxi driver. Ben feared the worst.
He knocked on the window, screaming for help.
Around the accident scene, cars had
stopped and people were rushing towards them. In the distance, the wail of the
ambulance sirens could be heard. Two men approached the taxi and signalled for
Ben to hold on. Ben watched the action taking place before him. He could see
black patches starting to appear in sight. Gradually, the scene became blurry.
Blood dripped continuously from his head and before long, he lost his
consciousness.
