Visiting a Police Station

Alexis was going to the police station with her classmates. It was part of the theme that she was studying for English – her neighbourhood. Alexis was looking forward to the outing because the police station was the only place in her neighbourhood that she had never been to.

When Alexis and her friends arrived at the station, there was a police officer waiting for them at the entrance. He greeted them and showed them in. Everyone was excited but nervous at the same time. They wondered if the police officers would be very stern. They were also thinking if they would be able to see criminals in handcuffs waiting in the station. They were pleasantly surprised to find out that the police station looked like a normal office. There was a counter where three police officers were seated. They looked extremely friendly. One of them was a policewoman who smiled and waved at them. Someone was making a report at the counter. She looked worried. Alexis found out that the lady had lost her purse when she was at the market. The police officer behind the counter talked to her patiently and asked her many questions. She then promised to look into the matter. Alexis was glad to see that the police officers were very friendly and helpful.

Alexis and her classmates walked around the police station, looking at the posters and reading some brochures. They listened as an officer showed them the police car and the bicycles that they used to patrol the neighbourhood. Two officers were heading out for their regular patrol around the neighbourhood. They told the children that they would be looking out for suspicious-looking characters in the neighbourhood. A senior police officer was about to give them a talk on how to take care of public property when a young man rushed into the station. His arm was bleeding and he had a swollen eye. He told a police officer that he had been beaten up by a stranger on his way to work this morning. A police officer rushed to attend to his wounds. Another police officer offered him a drink. A third one waited patiently to ask him more details about the attack.

Alexis was impressed by how caring the officers were. She finally knew the numerous things police officers had to deal with in a day’s work. As she left the police station, she marvelled at how efficient and professional they were when carrying out their duties.
