An Embarrassing Situation

I was helping to take down the curtains when they became stuck on a hook. The loud ripping sound made me cringe. My hair stood on end and I turned beetroot. Immediately, my thoughts returned to that embarrassing day.

It was after school and I had a particularly heavy meal during recess. Standing at the bus stop, I recalled my mother’s warning as I was leaving the house that morning. “Your trousers are much too tight. If you overeat, they’ll burst,” she said.

I almost burst out laughing at how ludicrous her words were. Just then, the bus arrived and I pushed my way through the crowd to board. At that moment, I heard an ear-shattering rip. I froze. My mother was right. The worst had happened. My trousers had ripped, just like my mother said it would. Worst of all, it was the day I was wearing the yellow and red striped underwear I got on my eighth birthday. My hand flew to cover the hole behind but it was too late. An elderly lady behind me guffawed loudly. She was obviously amused and she made no attempt to hide it. Hoping that no one else had noticed, I lengthened my backpack so that it would cover the hole. Then I hurried up the bus. I was relieved that no one else had noticed.

Squashed in the crowded bus, I held on tightly as the bus moved off. Suddenly, the bus made a sharp turn. I lost my balance and my backpack slid off my shoulders. I hurriedly bent down to retrieve my backpack. I had just retrieved my bag when I heard a shrill voice behind me say, “Look, Mother! That boy’s stripy underwear looks just like mine!”

For the second time that day, I froze, not knowing what to do. I hoped that I would be as lucky as I had been earlier but this time, it was different. The entire busload of passengers broke out in uncontrollable laughter. Even the bus driver was chuckling. A few students from my school bent over, clutching their stomachs in laughter.

Lowering my eyes, I pressed the bell to alight. I could feel the tips of my ears turning red. As I stepped off the bus, a man sitting at the exit had a twinkle in his eye as he smiled at me. I was so embarrassed that I flew down the steps and ran in the direction of my house, not daring to turn back.
