My Birthday Celebration

I could not believe my eyes when I saw Peter and Fred struggling under the weight of the huge cake. Twelve orange flames flickered above it, giving the room a mysterious glow. Everyone belted out the birthday song. I clapped my hands with delight. My birthday had finally arrived.

The day started out like any other ordinary day. However, for me, it was different. It was my birthday and I was twelve years old. Unlike my previous birthday celebrations, this time there would not be a homemade birthday cake like in the past. Neither would there be a table of hot catered food in silver steamers. There would not be any childish party games either. This year, I was having a party at a chalet instead. Before the party started, I could hear a myriad of sounds around me.

The fire had already been started on the grill outside and plates of chicken wings, sausages and prawns were waiting to be cooked. Some of my friends were already cooking the food. The party was going to be a great one. At that moment, the rumbling of thunder could be heard in the distance and a flash of lightning streaked across the sky. Alarmed, everyone rushed to take the food back into the chalet.

There was a drastic change in the weather as the sky became overcast. I stared in dismay as big drops of rain pelted down on the floor. Just when I thought my party was ruined, the curtains were suddenly drawn and out of the corner of my eye, I saw an orange glow. The huge birthday cake came as a pleasant surprise for I thought that my friends were buying me one that was much smaller. After the birthday song, I closed my eyes and made a wish.

It was one of the best birthday celebrations I had ever had. The rain stopped after a while and we were able to resume our barbecue. Although we did not play games, we spent a lot of time talking to one another and telling jokes. Towards the end of the party, I opened my presents. While some of them munched on the leftover barbecued food and others played with the balloons, I ripped open one interesting present after another and thanked my friends for their thoughtful gifts.
